Enjoy it while you can. Evidence suggests that the conflicting
demands of "green" energy requirements and 3D have substantially
reduced the 2D performance of newer Panasonic plasma displays.
The review I read today of the Panasonic TC-P50VT25 plasma display in
Widescreen Review is downright dismaying. Apparently flicker,
contouring, and motion artifacts are substantially worse (in 2D mode)
than earlier models. Power consumption is dramatically reduced
(should make California very happy) to 139 watts in a 50 inch display,
which is much lower than similar-sized LCD displays, and perhaps 3-4X
less power than plasma displays from a couple of years ago.
Green energy requirements have not killed plasma since Panasonic and
Samsung are producing new plasma displays, but perhaps it is sucking
the life out of it. A similar-sized plasma display from Samsung
(PN-50C7000) seemed to get a much better review but the power
specification only says "Exceeds Energy Star standards" so perhaps it
uses much more power than the Panasonic.
