It's probably a bit more trouble that it's worth. But couldn't you use the
embed code on a page with its background set to black?

<HTML>

<HEAD>

<TITLE>Robs black YouTube bg</TITLE>

<STYLE css="text/css">
body {background-color: black}

</STYLE>

 </HEAD>

 <BODY>

<!--add YouTube embed code here, save as (anything).html then open in
browser-->

 </BODY>

 </HTML>

In a possible fork of recent discussion re: white reference...

Is there any method perhaps by hack, that would allow me to mask out the
white surround with black?

(I use Safari on a Mac if that's relevant.)
