"Girls" takes place in unromantic modern day Brooklyn featuring a group of low-fi twenty-somethings. It would be inappropriate to the subject matter to make it look like it was shot on 50 year old film.

What immediately struck me (even before the part of the film where they go back in time) was that the appearance of the film was as if it was shot on 50 year old film stock without the associated 50 years of defects. There was a pleasant old-time warmth to the colors. The appearance was definitely not like the HBO show "Girls".
