It indeed seems possible, but the result is not the same as true 10 
bit.  Averaging 4 8 bit samples does not produce the levels available 
with 10 bits.  However, if the camera intentionally mis-encoded its 
output (with the expectation of postprocessing with a specific 
algorithm) then many more levels could be made available via 
postprocessing.
