Well not quite as bad as that.

The original neg was ‘damaged’ by overuse as many original prints were made from the original negative in the 1960s.
There were two fine-grain master positive that were made from the original negative 
as well, one used by Kubrick to make prints, but he was reportedly not happy with the contrast 
and density from the reproduction — a common problem in black and white.
One of these master positives was used as the source of the 2007 Sony restoration scanned at 4K.
Although grainer than a first generation print, it is really a good presentation DCP.
