Re: da Vinci seminar
Participation in the recent da Vinci User Group meeting exceeded 40
colorists, engineers and facility owner/management from Chicago,
Detroit, Atlanta and New York. Below is a synopsis of many of the
comments made during our HiRes panel discussion. If you have any
questions, please feel free to contact me or the individual members of
the panel. The next da Vinci User Group meeting is tentatively
scheduled for November 9-10. The location will be Munich, Germany.
The Panel topic: The Future of Color Correction in the Resolution
Jeff Lee, Director of Telecine, SMA
Domenic Rom, VP Operations, DuArt
John Dowdell, Director of Advanced Imaging, Tape House
Dave Corbitt, Director of Telecine, Manhattan Transfer
David Warner, Chief Telecine Engineer, Crawford Communications
JOHN DOWDELL: Recently purchased Spirit. Data has tremendous
advantages. Can be brought into system (SGI) in background. Data is
the future of color correction. No aliasing with data. Over sampling
is key advantage. The biggest questions still revolve around
DAVID WARNER: Recently purchased Spirit. Asked what type of special
effects in RI environment would bring (de-focus, softening, perspective,
JEFF LEE: Recently purchased Spirit. Expressed big concerns over
industry growth and the cost of new RI hardware.
DAVE CORBITT: Taking a wait-and-see attitude. Feels that standard
resolution is still the mainstay of business and will be for long time.
Many current problems can still be overcome with standard resolution.
DOMENIC ROM: Also taking wait-and-see attitude. Feels the future is
unsure. Current standard resolution is still great. Gold/888 combo is
excellent. But the worlds of film and video are getting closer every
day. Colorist will be vital in Cineon/Flame world in future.
Topic: Real-time feel for RI:
JOHN DOWDELL: A must. Clients will demand it. Colorists are real-time
operators unlike Photo Shop-style artists.
DAVID WARNER: Clients want to see what they are used to=97real-time
Topic: Storage media:
JOHN DOWDELL: Images will need to be easily transported between
facilities. A dedicated data machine format needs to be chosen. D1 or
D5? Perhaps fiber optics is in the future.
DOMENIC ROM: Recently purchased a Kodak Genesis because Kodak
understands film. Real-time is not an issue with this system. Scanning
time is also not an issue.
Topic: Where should RI color correction take place, telecine suite or
DAVID WARNER: Definitely in telecine suite with the colorist when going
to video. Not as important when going to film. da Vinci ergonomics
very important in RI world.
DOMENIC ROM: Depends on final product: film or video, feature or
JEFF LEE: The colorist is trained to work in the telecine suite and
should be found there.
Topic: Networking or central server:
Answered by various attendees. Major problems. One application will
always want to be dominant. Many applications may require different
versions of operating system. Not a working idea yet. May never be.
Answered by various attendees. Biggest problem of all because video
monitors have built-in gamma compensation, data monitors do not. CRT
monitors will go away in a few years for professional applications and
be replaced by newer (perhaps projection) technology. Too many

Answered by various attendees. Although colorist can work in graphics
suite, graphics artists can be trained to do enough color correction for
what is needed.
