Hardware/Software obsolescence (was Unix and NT)

Look at the history of anything technological and the same pattern emerges.
 This is nothing new.  In the microcosm of Telecine (to get back into TIG
domain) lots of hardware/software changes (some very costly) came and went
in the last decade. 

without change there is no progress ... and sometimes to have progress you
have to go backwards a step or two.
