In many cases, greed does not provide for the advancement of
technology, and that is specifically the case with Microsoft's
business decisions. Their business model, invoked frequently, is to
see where other companies are going, then buy or steal their
advancements, and squelch those that threaten their market position.
See especially their ongoing attempt to usurp and disembowel the Java
language, for which they are being sued by Sun. See as well the
current lawsuits brought by the US DofJ and numerous states.
