As the E-Mail from Robert Lund about the transfers Joe Bond did at
Teletronics back in the early days. As an assistant we would transfer
PRINT ONLY (no one would even think of going near the negative). We got
a fresh answer print from the lab, would take it to the rewind bench and
inspect it for a scene change. When we found a change we would put on an
oval sliver foil cue mark on the outside outer edge of the film between
this outer edge and the sprocket holes about 12-14 frames before the
scene change. This was our NOTCH - OR MARK for the scene. When you ran
the film the film path passed a sensor that would pick up the foil cue
and the system would change to the next scene correction. You would need
to change the foil cue if the scene did not change at the exact spot.
You needed to lay down the first set of scenes on tape and then correct
for the next set of scenes all over if you had more scenes to transfer
from the same spot. The transfer master was to a 2" V.T.R. master tape
machine. A 60 second spot would take from 2-3 hours to transfer or the
whole night if you had client's supervising the transfer. Back in the
good old days at Young & Rubicam when you said you were going to
transfer it meant you were going going and in some cases gone.
