For all those in the LA area a number of us are going to the Monday,
August 2nd 8 PM presentation of the Digital Cinema Showing of Disney's
Tarzan. This will be a the AMC Media 6 complex at the North end of the
Burbank Media Center Mall. Many are going to meet at the California
Pizza Kitchen nearby at 6:15 pm for dinner.
This digital cinema version of Tarzan has never been on film. Instead
the computer generated data files (archived on CD-R) that were scanned
out to film have instead been converted directly in the digital domain
to 1280 x 1024 pixels for display on the TI DLP projection system.
These images were recorded to disk and then transferred in chunks to
D5-HD. The electronic images were then color corrected using a DaVinci
2K color corrector while looking at a TI DLP projected image. This work
was done by Tim Peeler at Vidfilm, Glendale, CA. The presentation will
be playing back from D5-HD. This 1280 x 1024 image format is then
expanded with an anamorphic lens of 1.5 expansion to achieve the final
image of 1.85 to 1.
I have seen the presentation already and the images are very pleasing.
Does not look exactly like film as there is no film grain -- just a
large, bright steady image. This is probably a perfect presentation
method for images that were computer generated. Of course Phantom
Menace could have been presented with this method as the entire film at
ILM is reported to have been scanned back to film from data files.
The d-cinema version of Tarzan is playing at the AMC Media Center 6,
Burbank, the AMC Pleasure Island 24, Lake Buena Vista, FL and the
Edward's Irvine Spectrum, Irvine CA. This is scheduled to continue
until at least August 12.
Hope to see you Monday evening. At the CA Pizza Kitchen asked to be
seated with the TARZAN group. At the theater set 3/4 of the way back in
the theater (it is a small theater) and probably you can figure out who
is who from the conversation.
Where: AMC Media Center 6 - 770 N. 1st ST., Burbank
When: Monday, August 2, 1999
Time: 8 pm show
Dinner: California Pizza Kitchen, 601 N. San Fernando, Burbank
(same parking structure as the theater) 6:15 pm
